In this talk, Anastassis Spiliadis, a systemic and family psychotherapist reflects on what’s missing in the gender care conversation: clear, evidence-informed psychotherapeutic alternatives. While debate often focuses on medical interventions (and the limits of the evidence base), far less attention has been given to what clinicians can offer in the therapy room, how to work with families, and how to evaluate outcomes in a more systematic way.

Almost one year after the landmark Cass Review was published what progress has been made to achieve recommendations from her review that services for gender questioning young children prioritise a psycho social approach rather than a medical one? In this meeting, facilitated by Sonia Sodha, experts talked about the youth gender care landscape following the Cass Review.
Anastassis Spiliadis spoke in support of psychotherapy for children and young people with gender related distress, referencing the relevant recommendations in the Cass Review. He reflected on some of the challenges in making the shift to a more holistic psychotherapeutic way of providing services for children and young people with gender related distress and highlighted the need for services for detransitioners. mins 35:00 – 50:00.

“What’s one thing parents can do when their teen is struggling with their relationship to their body?”.
Anastassis highlights an intriguing observation: while parents typically find it easy to talk about bodies during infancy, they often feel awkward discussing these matters during adolescence—a critical period when emotional distress can become ‘embodied’. He points out that although we’ve made strides in acknowledging and discussing teenagers’ emotional experiences, as a society, we still struggle to address bodily changes during later childhood.
